4. Computer-Assisted Manual Thread Marking
William A. Sethares
This chapter introduces software designed to assist in the collection of manual thread counts in a repeatable, readily documented procedure that substantially reduces the time necessary to collect a statistically sufficient number of spot counts to compute a trustworthy average thread count. This software can be applied to the user’s digital images, and can be freely downloaded from the GitHub repository. Hand-count reports on Vermeer’s paintings, made using this software, are available among the computer-based appendices in this monograph.
